1. Measure the fence line

Measure every side you want fenced and add them up.

2. Pick the fence
3. Gates and old fence

Leave blank if gates are in the per-foot price.

Leave blank if there is no old fence.

How this calculator works

Fence contractors quote by the linear foot, installed. The calculator multiplies your total length by the price per foot, then adds any gate and removal prices you enter from your quote. Sections are the length divided by the post spacing. Posts are one per section plus one to finish the run, plus one for each corner and gate.

What pushes fence prices up or down

  • Height and style. A 6 ft privacy fence uses far more material than a 4 ft picket fence.
  • Material. Wood and chain link cost the least. Composite, wrought iron and steel cost the most.
  • Ground. Rocky soil, slopes and tree roots slow down post digging.
  • Gates. Each gate adds hardware and labor and is often priced on its own line.
  • Permits and HOA rules. Many towns cap fence height and require a permit or a property survey.

Before anyone digs post holes, call 811 a few business days ahead so underground utility lines get marked for free.

Where the prices come from

The starting prices are U.S. national installed ranges from 2025 and 2026 cost guides. Open Edit the prices in the calculator to replace any of them with the numbers from your own quote.

Common questions

How many fence posts do I need?

Divide the fence length by the post spacing (usually 8 ft) and round up, add one post to finish the run, then add one for every corner and gate. A straight 96 ft run with 8 ft spacing needs 13 posts.

Why is my quote different from the calculator?

Local labor rates, fence height, style and site conditions all move the price. Put your quote’s price per foot into Edit the prices to compare materials on the same terms.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

Often, yes, especially for tall fences or fences in a front yard. Check with your city or county, and your HOA if you have one, before you build.
