How this calculator works
Area is length times width, plus any turnaround or parking pad. The cost is that area times the installed price per square foot. Tons of hot-mix asphalt are the area in square yards, times the thickness in inches, times about 110 lb, divided by 2,000.
What pushes driveway prices up or down
- Base work. A new driveway needs a compacted gravel base. Soft or wet ground costs more to fix.
- Thickness. Thicker asphalt uses more material, and heavy vehicles need a thicker drive.
- Old driveway. Tearing out an old driveway, drainage work and edging are often extra.
- Size. Small jobs cost more per square foot because paving crews have fixed setup costs.

Resurfacing works when the base is solid and the damage is surface cracking. Deep cracks, potholes across the drive or sinking areas usually mean the base has failed and the driveway needs replacing.
