How this calculator works

Wall area is the distance around the house times the wall height. If you check the gable box, it adds the two triangles under the roof, then subtracts about 15 sq ft for each window and 21 sq ft for each door.

Contractors price siding per square foot of wall covered, so the cost uses that area. The extra for cuts and waste only changes how much material you would order. Siding is also sold by the square: one square covers 100 sq ft.

What pushes siding prices up or down

  • Material. Vinyl and aluminum sit at the low end. Fiber cement, wood and brick veneer cost more to buy and to install.
  • Height and access. Second and third stories need scaffolding and more labor.
  • Trim and corners. Lots of windows, corners and detail work add cutting time and trim pieces.
  • Removal. Taking off and hauling away old siding typically adds $1,000 to $2,500 per job.
  • Permits. Many towns require one for re-siding. Fees run from about $150 to $1,500.

Common questions

How many squares of siding do I need?

Divide your wall area by 100, then add about 10% for cuts and waste. A house with 1,800 sq ft of wall needs about 20 squares.

Can new siding go over the old siding?

Sometimes, and it saves the removal cost. Many installers still prefer to strip the old siding so they can check the sheathing for rot and put up a proper weather barrier. Ask what the product warranty requires before you decide.

Does the estimate include soffits, fascia and gutters?
