How this calculator works
A gable roof sheds water to the two long sides of the house, so gutters run along both. A hip roof slopes on all four sides, so gutters go all the way around. Downspouts are estimated at one for roughly every 35 ft of gutter, at least two per house, each about 10 ft tall per story.
What pushes gutter prices up or down
- Material. Vinyl is the cheapest, aluminum the most common, and steel and copper the most expensive.
- Seamless or sectional. Seamless gutters are formed on site in long pieces and usually cost more than snap-together sections.
- Height. Gutters on a second or third story take longer and need taller ladders.
- Extras. Gutter guards, fascia repair and underground drains are extra.

How many downspouts do I need?
A common rule is one downspout for every 30 to 40 ft of gutter. Homes in heavy-rain areas, or with large, steep roofs, may need more.
5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
5-inch gutters are standard on most houses. 6-inch gutters carry more water and suit big or steep roofs and rainy climates.
Is removing the old gutters included?
Only if your quote says so. Removal is often a small extra charge.
